The way to the Lalune estate took a while to find. It was on one of the bluffs overlooking Woodward, where narrow lanes led off to the mega mansions that had sprung up in light of the towns excellent ski slopes and natural beauty. Even then, the Lalune estate was more hidden than most. After a ten minute drive along a bumpy trail, I came across the wrought iron gates. There were two beautiful stone wolves guarding the gate, which opened slowly to let me in. In the corner, a small camera recorded my arrival.
I nudged the car forward slowly. Instead of cutting back the trees into a manicured lawn like most other mansions along this road, Max had left nature free. His estate stretched on and on, and at one point I could have sworn I saw a deer by the side of the road. At least he seemed to respect the land, I thought.
Finally I came upon the house. It looked like a cabin resort, it was so big. Surely more people than he lived in such a huge house. I got out slowly, taking it all in. It was built with huge logs, with a natural stone side that made it seem as though it had sprung from the land itself. I knocked on the door, and a woman opened up to let me in.
“Welcome,” she said, her voice subdued. “Master awaits.”
I bristled at the term ‘Master’. It seemed so… antiquated. She turned around and left, not seeing if I would follow. The inside was just as beautiful as the outside of the house. A large fireplace crackled with warmth, and I could see large squashy sofa’s where one could curl up with a good book. The hallway we went into was not so bright. Our steps echoed on the hardwood.
Finally we came to a large wooden door. The woman knocked twice, and left, returning to her position by the door no doubt.
“Come in and close the door behind you.”
His voice was, if possible, even more ragged. I hesitated for just a moment. If I went inside, I had a strange feeling that my life would never be the same. I opened the door slowly. I was in the master suite. Here another fire blazed, and a giant four poster bed was laid out with the pelts of animals. Books lined the shelves. My eyes settled on the figure pacing by the window.
My mouth dried up, speechless. I wasn’t sure what I saw before me. It was Max, and yet, undoubtedly it wasn’t. He was taller, broader, with powerful muscles that rippled with raw power. Dark wiry hair crossed his body, and when he looked up at me, his eyes gleamed.
“What’s wrong with you?!”
He barked a laugh.
“Not quite so pleasing to the eye anymore, am I? I thought this might change your mind.”
“I don’t understand.”
He was by my side in a flash, loping along the floor before rising up in front of me. His eyes shone like molten gold, lethal in its beauty.
